We Are The Caretakers Is An Intensely Exciting RPG

Games are at their best when they’re doing something interesting. It’s one of the reasons I like writing about indie games so much, because they’re nearly always doing something a bit different, whether that’s in terms of gameplay, mechanics, or just the general feel. We Are The Caretakers is an afrofuturist squad management RPG. Think along the lines of Darkest Dungeon and XCOM in terms of the RPG elements, and you’re pretty close to the kind of experience you can expect.

Rather than you journeying to new lands to take over and do otherwise morally iffy stuff, you play as a group of people who want to look after their world, protect the animals, and try to keep everything alive. It’s a far more interesting take on this kind of thing that simply fighting off an alien threat, and being on the other side of exploration allows for some potentially fascinating story-telling. Also, animals are great, and the chance to protect alien wildlife is something I am absolutely chomping at the bit to do.

On top of how cool the game looks in general, the devs are going to donate 10% of the net revenue from the game to Wildlife Conservation Network’s Rhino Recovery Fund. It’s always really cool to see games pledging things like this to ensure they help the kind of causes they’re raising awareness for, and if you like the sound of everything so far, then you’ll be very happy to know that We Are The Caretakers should be releasing on April 22nd.
